Member Benefits

Why join our Guild?

Our guild offers membership rewards – but our rewards are not all necessarily tangible. Here are a few of the benefits you will receive from our guild:

  • community & friendship
  • fabric-related discussions
  • opportunities to learn from local and not so local instructors
  • the occasional road trip
  • opportunities to stretch and challenge yourself
  • opportunities to show your work (and to see the work of others)
  • monthly newsletter with program information & guild updates

More Specifically….

Monthly Meetings

Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, September through June, starting at 9:30am at the Ag Hall.  It can be a full day if you want.  The morning consists of a short business meeting, show & share, a coffee break, and then programs (see below) with time for sewing in the afternoon.   Bring your lunch, your machine and any materials required for the program, or your own projects to work on.  Tea, coffee and baked goods or other snacks are provided.  The library is open for the whole day, with over 150 books to choose from.

Show & Share

What is this?  It’s a chance to show us what you’ve made – share your work.  It can be any type of fibre art – not just a quilt.  Even a great piece of fabric.  Tell us the great story behind your project.   Stumped on what do to on a quilt?  Hold it up and let everyone chime in with their suggestions.   No project is too big or small to share.  Plus, you can see the work others have been doing.

Programs

Most months at the guild meeting we try to have an instructional program.  This could be a project you finish in a day, or a new technique.  There may be a nominal charge for the program, depending on the materials needed/supplied, patterns, etc.   Information on the program will be listed in the newsletter and you’ll need to sign up and pay in advance.

Guild Luncheons

Twice a year, at our December and June meetings, we are a bit more festive, and have a pot luck lunch.  The business meeting is usually quick, offering more time for socializing.

Quilt ’til you Wilt (aka WILT)

Held the 3rd Thursday of the month, from 9am-4pm at the Ag Hall, September through June, and sometimes in the summer.  This is a full day of sewing on whatever projects you want to work on.  You will usually have a full table to yourself, and there are tables for basting and larger projects too. There’s always lots of help & advice if requested.  Plus the library is open!  Bring your project(s), machine, your lunch, a mug and a thread catcher.  $5 pays for the full day.  Snacks are always welcome!

Hands Across the Water (HAW)

This full day event takes place every year, usually in June.  It’s a gathering of member of the guilds from Galiano, Pender, Saturna, Duncan (Cowichan) and Mayne.  The location rotates each year.

Quilt Show

Our quilt show is held every 4 years.  We just hosted a show in July 2022.   Held in the Japanese Gardens at Dinner Bay park, we usually have over 150 quilts on display, plus a merchants mall and tea room.  You must be a guild member to enter a quilt in the show.

Comfort Quilts

Our guild makes quilts to give to island residents in times of need.  This could be for illness, or a family situation – quilts always provide comfort.  We usually focus one program per year on making comfort quilts.  But anyone is welcome to make and donate quilts to this thoughtful  cause.

Website & Social Media

We do have a website and input is always welcome!  The website address is:   www.mayneislandquiltersguild.com  We also have a Facebook page.

Workshops & Education

From time to time, we bring in instructors to help us learn new skills or techniques.  The price for these workshops can vary, and payment is required to reserve your space.  If you do sign up for a workshop, and are not able to attend, we usually have a waiting list of people who can take your place.

 Satellite Groups

There are 2-3 satellite groups within the Guild. These smaller groups of quilters meet to work on projects together and receive support for their quilting.

Mentorship Program

As a new member, if you are interested, we will find an experienced quilter who will act as a mentor to you to provide any support you need.

Cost

Your first visit is free!  Membership fees are $50/year, due in September.  As a member you will receive access to everything mentioned above, plus a list of Guild members.
